Most humane way to kill fish?

When I catch a keeper trout I want it to die quick and not suffer at all. What I do is stick my thumb in their neck and push until their neck breaks. On bigger fish I put my hand in and pull its head back to the spine to snap its neck. Is this the best way I can kill them or is their something more humane

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

My father-in-law hits their head against a rock and it seems to kill them pretty quick.  I use to cut the heads off but realised that this was a little cruel and unusual.
I think I like my father-in-laws way word well.  Just make sure you clean them right away so the insides don't start going bad.

I hope this thread doesnt turn into the great C&R debate as I think it is a great question to ask.

Hey Mitch, that is a really interesting link.  I was not aware of all of those crazy methods.  I guess the knife method is probably the best, not the head & rock method.

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

Also I only put trout back if I have caught a limit of fish. I like eating trout and im sure lots of you do and I respect fish and fish's habitats so dont get into a big debate

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

Some of them took quite a bit of thought to come up with.  But the knife one was really informative.

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

Shoot them.  If any of you have ever fished for halibut, you know I'm serious.

On fish that I keep I have to gill them.  They bleed out with just a snip of the gills.  I don't like the head bonk method, as it just seems crude to me, but it works.  Breaking their neck would be instant, but the fish that I end up keeping (mainly halibut or off shore salmon) are too big to break their necks.  And if anyone can show me a halibut's neck, I'd be happy to pay attention.

And I agree that this is a good question, and shouldn't turn into a C&R discussion.   There's nothing wrong with keeping and eating fish within reason and within legal limit.  Good for you for asking, Silver.

Perhaps I should have used an emoticon .
slywink   there it is

Whenever the guys and I go on fly-ins we always eat some lakers (with fish crisp  yum yum) so I deffinately have no problems with catch and eat , provided the fishery is more than sustainable (even more important than if its legal) .

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

My personal favorite:

The Microwave

Apart from the fact there's no where to plug in on the beach, microwaving live fish is not considered humane.

But seriously:

Alcohol

A small amount of vodka, whiskey etc is placed in the fishes mouth instantly stopping the heart. I've never tried this or met anyone who has but it does get mentioned on occasions. Giving a fish a final drink may just be part of angling folklore, then again.......

This method to me seems like the best.

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

Mitch24        Some guys I know carry some scotch , since its not really fit for human consumption I'll mention it to them .         I might have to duck afterwards though ...

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

lol Duck and cover

I don't know if i would waste expensive scotch on that, i would probably just bring a little container of cheap liquor, but if anyone is going to use this method, don't use it on a boat!

I'm sure that its not fast, or humane. Rubbing Alcohol maybe, it seem to kill wisp, pickel snake and what not. But I'm sure that small amount of vodka will not kill. I had a few expreance with fishing + vodka. :P

There is a pay trout pond north of London that use electricity to kill them before gutting it. Seem to work fast.

If i have to kill a fish I'll just cut the back of the head till the spine from the top. It will bleed the fish too. Or a hammer.

Alcohol on the gills of billfish is a common method of dispatching them.

But don't be knockin' good scotch!!!

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

Cutting through the lateral line close to the head with a sharp knife seems to kill them immediately.  I rarely kill a fish these days unless it's injured.

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

Rubbing alcohol is toxic to humans.  I prefer bashing, but I would think that the spine snap would be good if you can get a good grip on the fish.  There is an article on ??? (can't find it anymore) somewhere on how to keep a fish fresh  (it might have been referenced here too at a time).  Some of the points were not to keep it on a stringer (live), not to keep it in the water after it was dead, best to put it on ice (gutted) ASAP.  I can't remember the details anymore.

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

I think we've pretty much covered all forms of Capital Punishment.
Let's recap: what have we learned,

Hanging (stringer or snapping head back)
Guillotine (knife)
Maxwells Silver Hammer
Lethal Injection (cheap booze or....shudder sorry Steve.... Scotch)
Boring them to Death (readers Choice of Threads)
Electrifying (kim must have a long extension cord)
Microwaving (also good for re-heating and making popcorn)

And Robs suggestion and my personal favorite
...the Head Butt.

Go forth and Slay Ye some Trouts.
I just taunt them unmercifully and laugh at their tiny pea sized brains.

Re: Most humane way to kill fish?

The electrifying was done at a pay per fish, trout farm. It was before it was gutted.

And I know rubbing alcohol is toxic, I want to test that vodka can kill fish or not now <not that I would>. Since I remember poring vodka on a s.m bass very long time ago accedenly and it seem to live fine, maybe it didn't touched the gills.
